Top Wood

The choice of both type and quality of the wood used in the top of the guitar body may be the single most important decision faced by a guitar maker.

Very low priced guitars have plywood (the industry uses the term "laminated") bodies.

Slightly more costly guitars will substitute a solid wood top but keep the plywood back and sides. Because price is still driving the design decisions the wood used in the top is generally not high quality.

Solid wood acoustic guitars (meaning the entire body - top, back and sides - is real wood) are the toughest and most costly guitars to make but deliver such an elevated playing experience that many musicians consider them to be the only "real" acoustic guitars.

All MacKenzie & Marr Guitars are solid wood.

The top wood of our guitars is as follows:
Opeongo - AAA bookmatched Sitka Spruce
Tofino - AAA bookmatched Western Canadian Red Cedar
The Tom Rush Signature - AAA bookmatched Western Canadian Red Cedar
The Tom Rush Naked Lady - High Altitude bookmatched Western US Red Cedar

An Important Note Regarding Porch Pirates

When we ship a guitar we always send it with instructions to the courier that a signature MUST obtained at the time of delivery. If no one is home to sign for the carton it will not be left. We do this to insure that your guitar does not fall into the hands of porch pirates (or other nefarious characters such as bass players or drummers).
