When we found a secret stash of rare Bolivian Rosewood, we knew it was destined for an exceptional guitar. We challenged our workshop artisans to craft a one of a kind model that would define the art of building a MacKenzie and Marr acoustic.

They asked for inspiration, so we turned to our old friend in Alberta. Ian Tyson had definite ideas about what he wanted. The result of his input, together with the skill of our craftsmen, has delivered an exceptional solid wood Florentine cutaway - the Ian Tyson Inspiration, the newest MacKenzie & Marr Guitar.

A Florentine cutaway, one that comes to a sharp point, differs from a gently curved Venetian cutaway in more than just visual appeal. With a Florentine cutaway, the guitar is constructed as a symmetrical full-body model, and then the cutaway section is removed. The sidewall of the detached section is inverted and re-attached, creating the unique Florentine profile.

Because of the skill, time and difficulty required to craft a genuine Florentine cutaway, they are not as common as the Venetian version.

Please note:
The blend between dark heartwood and lighter sapwood varies from guitar to guitar. No matter what the blend between the two we guarantee that your guitar will be a work of art. (NB. Jerry, our luthier, and John waste a whole lot of time simply marvelling at each guitar as they prep it.)
The black pickguard on the sample is just plain ugly. All production guitars will have the clear pickguard pictured in the image gallery below.

Waited 2 months to get this guitar. On opening the guitar case, I was WOWED. the wood is just beautiful, great piece of art. I have had the guitar now for a week. The sound is amazing. Great sustain and well balanced. I am a novice player but feels great in my hands. I am practicing more which hopefully will make me a better player. Was worth the Waite. Great value for the money.

Lately, I've been looking about for a different guitar. I've been perfectly happy with my Martin HD-28. When I was learning to play in the late sixties, all my guitar influences played guitars like these. My parents were both musicians and I learned on my Dad's ' 51 Gibson SJ-200 and my Mom's '50 J-45. (Yes, I was lucky!) But, finally, after half a century, I finally realized something. I have a low baritone voice, and the boomy bottom end of those big dreadnoughts drowns out my voice when not plugged in. Back in the old days of poor PA systems, we needed all the volume we could get from acoustic. Not so, today. I'd been trying out some smaller guitars that have great sound and better balance. I found I particularly liked the Martin 000-28 style guitars. But...these are WAY over what I can afford! I love the sound of James Taylor's Olsen guitars, but these are much more expensive than even Martins! Strictly fantasy material! For the last few years. I've been watching the ads for MacKenzie and Marr guitars. They looked beautiful. The marketing philosophy seemed logical. The prices were excellent. All the words made sense – but, then again – Everyone makes claims like this! I've been underwhelmed too many times. I would never have dreamed of buying an acoustic guitar that I couldn't try in person. I don't know how many times I've advised people never to buy a guitar online! But, when I first saw the Ian Tyson inspired guitars on your site I was really intrigued. They looked wonderful, but I couldn't believe the claims about them at that price point. But – one day, I noticed a special deal for one that had been damaged and repaired. I contacted you and was assured that it still had a full factory warranty. The price was so good, I HAD to take it! When it arrived, I was thrilled! It was easily as good as the claims. I waited a few weeks to write this, to make sure I still thought so. I still think so. It actually is the same size as my Martin dread, but for some reason, it seems much smaller. It has that lovely rosewood/spruce sound that I want, but it is much more balanced. The play action is probably the best I've ever seen on an acoustic. More like a typical electric. It is great for both strumming and finger picking. The workmanship is exquisite. The look is even somewhat like those Olsens! And, yes, I've always liked Florentine cutaways. (even though I don't really do much playing up there) At that price, I can't believe that the case is as good as any I've seen on high end instruments. It really is as good as competitors' products costing many thousands of dollars. I can't believe my good fortune in finding such a good instrument at this price. There is only one thing I would change, but it's no fault of the guitar. The pickup included is very nice, and considered high end by most people. Again, I'm surprised to see one of these included in this price range. It works well, but it still has that piezo sound. True, it's well damped, but still, they have to give you directions on how to set it to “find” the best sound.. I will probably leave it in there and use it that way, but, I much prefer the K&K pure mini currently in my Martin. On that one, you don't need a battery, and there is only one sound – that of the guitar. It just gets louder when you turn it up. Personal preference, I suppose. I'm sure many would disagree with me on this. But, in general – I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

In 2021 we switched from driving to Florida to flying. So I needed to get a guitar that I'd play there. An American friend suggested M&M who were Canadian but I had never heard of. I ended up ordering the Ian Tyson Inspiration which they delivered there. On opening the box, my first impression was how beautiful it was. Unlike the model on the website which was a typical "dark" rosewood, it is a lighter "golden" colour with a lovely grain structure. On playing it, I was impressed by the ergonomics of its smooth straight neck, low action, and comfy body fit. And the sound! Wow. Clear, distinct, and balanced. The case too is beautiful, solid and very snugly padded. Heading back to Canada in 2022 I was very conflicted. I didn't want to leave my best guitar behind. But then I wouldn't have one in Florida. So I ordered another for delivery here! Again the same beautiful look, feel, and sound of the sibling. Obviously, I highly recommend it. Check out John Marr's videos of the Riverboat and ITI models which gives a better view of the back and sides of Bolivian rosewood. My spruce tops are "unblemished".

I Received my new instrument a little over 4 months after the order. There were some delays, but it was most definitely worth the wait. The craftsmanship is superb, as is the sound quality and comes with a custom fitting hardshell case. I'm now contemplating ordering the Riverboat Dred.

I'm primarily an electric player (Jazz, Blues, Rock) and have typically struggled with acoustic instruments because I can't do what I want to on them like I can on my archtops and solid body electrics. This Ian Tyson is the first acoustic that plays well enough for me to be able to play what I want. The feel and action is great, the instrument is beautiful & the sound is rich and full. Thank you Macmarr for introducing me to the acoustic I've been looking for these last 30 yrs.

Simply a terrific guitar! I own over 30 guitars, some costing in the multiple of thousands and this guitar is as good or better than any of them. It's also beautiful, plays easily and is an incredible buy. I am extremely happy with my purchase. Nice case too.

I am well pleased with my purchase of a M/M guitar. The fit and finish are impeccable. Playability is excellent. Set up nicely for my heavy strumming and flat picking. Big sound! I had no previous knowledge of this guitar maker, but the attractive price encouraged me to give it a try. Robust return policy gave me confidence that I was protected in case I was disappointed. I’m a happy buyer.

The GOOD, the less than good, the really great. After the 4 month wait, finally received the Ian Tyson Inspiration. The Good: Beautiful woodwork, good action, excellent case, well packaged and arrived intact and unscathed by UPS and multiple other shipping adventures. The Lass than Good: Was missing the nylon tool to adjust the front/back balance on the Anthem pickup system. Contacted L.R. Baggs and they are sending one via post. Also was expecting an unattached clear pick guard, was not included. If I decide to put a pick guard on will source via internet. There is one blemish on the guitar......a chip in the finish at the edge of the cable plug-in/strap knob. The fitting is secure and the blemish is in a spot that is invisible when the strap is in place. Not a biggie, but just wanted to give a full, honest review. Contacted John and he said a clear pick guard is on its way and that compensation will be provided for the chipping at the strap peg. The REALLY GREAT: The sound!!!! What a live, balanced sound. For a "green" guitar, this amount of resonance and purity of tone are amazing and foretell of even more wonderful sounds as the guitar matures and seasons in. Have been playing the guitar for a month or so in rehearsal and performance and it is indeed opening up and sounding fantastic! Well done MacMarr!!!
