The Ian Tyson Inspiration Florentine Cutaway Acoustic Guitar
A songwriter’s guitar with a voice all its own. The Ian Tyson Inspiration pairs the warmth and complexity of Bolivian Rosewood with a responsive Sitka Spruce top, our distinctive Alberta body and an elegant Florentine cutaway — built for players who want every note, chord and lyric to have room to breathe.
The Ian Tyson Inspiration began with a challenge: create a guitar worthy of one of Canada’s great songwriters without putting it beyond the reach of the musicians who would want to play it.
We built it around our proprietary Alberta body, pairing a responsive Sitka Spruce top with Bolivian Rosewood back and sides. The goal was never simply to assemble impressive tonewoods. Top, back and sides, bracing, neck and dovetail joint all have to work together as one acoustic system. The result is a voice with projection and sustain, rich in musical overtones, but balanced enough to leave space for the most important instrument in a songwriter’s hands — the human voice.
The Florentine cutaway adds effortless access to the upper frets and gives the guitar its unmistakable silhouette. More difficult to build than a conventional rounded cutaway, it also reflects something fundamental about the Ian Tyson Inspiration: we chose the more demanding approach when it produced the guitar we wanted to make.
It is a guitar conceived for songs — one that responds well when driven hard, yet retains its nuance and detail when fingerpicked. Across that dynamic range, chords remain articulate, individual notes have room to speak, and the guitar leaves space for the human voice rather than competing with it.
Direct to musician
Before I was born Ian Tyson told John Marr it was not possible to create a great Florentine cut-a-way at a reasonable price. When I arrived on his doorstep he called John and said only one thing "I hate the taste of humble pie"
My Alberta body is so sweet. It's not like I spend a lot of time in front of the mirror (OK I do, but so what) My almost-too-big lower bout and svelte waist create a musical playground just waiting for your fingers on my strings.
I seem to get along especially well with songwriters.

Description
The Ian Tyson Inspiration pairs a solid Sitka Spruce top with solid Bolivian Rosewood back and sides. Sitka combines responsiveness with the headroom to handle a strong attack, while Bolivian Rosewood contributes depth, sustain and harmonic complexity. That combination helps explain why the guitar can be driven hard without losing definition, yet still reveals nuance and detail under a lighter fingerstyle touch.
Our proprietary Alberta body provides the air volume for a full, balanced voice while remaining comfortable to hold. The Florentine cutaway gives clear access to the upper frets, while its demanding construction and distinctive point set the guitar apart visually from the more common rounded Venetian cutaway.
A Macassar Ebony fingerboard and bridge provide a hard, stable foundation for clean note articulation and efficient transfer of string energy. The traditional dovetail neck-to-body joint creates a strong mechanical connection between neck and body, allowing them to work together rather than as isolated components.
A bone nut and saddle provide hard, consistent contact points for the strings, while Grover 18:1 vintage-style open-gear tuners allow precise tuning adjustments. Each guitar is professionally set up for low, comfortable action and fitted with D’Addario XT strings before it leaves us.
The result is a versatile acoustic guitar built not around any single specification, but around how those choices work together in the player’s hands.
FAQ
What is a Florentine cutaway?
A Florentine cutaway is the sharply pointed cutaway on the treble side of an acoustic guitar, providing easier access to the higher frets.
Unlike a rounded Venetian cutaway, which can be formed simply by bending the guitar’s side into the cutaway shape, a Florentine requires considerably more skill. The treble side is first bent as though the guitar will have a full, uncut body, then precisely cut where the point will be formed. The cut section is reversed and reattached to create the distinctive sharp point. It is a more demanding construction technique, chosen for the Ian Tyson Inspiration for both upper-fret access and the elegant, unmistakable profile it gives the guitar.
What kind of player is the Ian Tyson Inspiration designed for?
The Ian Tyson Inspiration is particularly well suited to singer-songwriters and players who move between different styles. It responds well when driven with a pick, retaining clarity and definition as volume increases, while preserving the nuance and detail that fingerstyle players depend on. Its balanced voice also leaves room for vocals rather than competing with them.
What does Bolivian Rosewood contribute to the sound?
Bolivian Rosewood is a dense tonewood that contributes depth, sustain and harmonic complexity. Paired with the responsive Sitka Spruce top, it helps produce strong bass, articulate trebles and rich overtones while maintaining clarity across the frequency range.
What is the Alberta body shape?
The Alberta is our proprietary body shape derived from the old-time Jumbo, originally developed for the MacKenzie & Marr Algonquin 12. It provides a generous internal air volume for a full, authoritative voice while remaining comfortable and well-balanced in the player’s hands. On the Ian Tyson Inspiration, that body shape helps deliver depth and projection without sacrificing clarity or responsiveness.
Is the Ian Tyson Inspiration good for fingerstyle playing?
Yes. A light fingerstyle touch brings out nuance, harmonic detail and individual note definition, while the guitar has enough dynamic range to respond when played much harder. That ability to move naturally from delicate fingerpicking to strong strumming is one of its defining characteristics.
Who was Ian Tyson, and why is this guitar named after him?
Ian Tyson was one of Canada’s most influential singer-songwriters, known first as half of Ian & Sylvia and later for songs rooted in the landscapes and culture of the Canadian West. The Ian Tyson Inspiration grew from conversations with Ian about building a distinctive Florentine-cutaway acoustic guitar at a price working musicians could reasonably afford. After initially doubting that it could be done, Ian played the finished guitar and famously told us, “I hate the taste of humble pie.”
Why does the Ian Tyson Inspiration use a dovetail neck joint?
A traditional dovetail creates a strong wood-to-wood mechanical connection between the neck and body. We consider that connection an important part of the guitar’s acoustic system, allowing string energy to move efficiently through the instrument and helping the neck, top, back and sides work together to produce projection, sustain and musical overtones.
What’s so special about a Florentine cutaway?
A well-executed Florentine cutaway is a testament to the skill of the builder. Unlike a rounded Venetian cutaway, which can be formed by bending the guitar’s side into the cutaway shape, a traditional Florentine is considerably more demanding to build. The treble side is first bent as though forming a full-bodied guitar, then precisely cut where the distinctive point will be created. The cut section is reversed, carefully fitted and rejoined to form the sharp Florentine point.
The additional skill, precision and labour involved are among the reasons Florentine cutaways are more often found on higher-priced guitars and typically command a premium. Beyond providing excellent access to the upper frets, the Florentine gives the Ian Tyson Inspiration its unmistakable silhouette — and represents a level of craftsmanship you can see before you ever play a note.

The music I play is original. By that I mean that I do not play songs by other artists. Every time I pick up the instrument I create. The song is played, enjoyed, and never played or heard again. That is just what I do. The Ian Tyson is perfect for this. The feel and tone allow me to express myself without hinderance. It is pure joy to play and hear. I am so happy that I bought this guitar. I very much appreciate the craftsmanship and quality also. Thank you MacKenzie & Marr. You made this old musician happy!

I have highly recommended Mackenzie Marr to the guitar group that I am a member of.
