The MacKenzie & Marr Tofino is a solid-wood Cedar top acoustic guitar that harkens back to a time of hand-craftsmanship - before CNC machines took over the production floor, bean counters ruled the office and "branding" replaced pride of artistry - Back to a time when the link between craftsman and musician still existed and back to a time when a simple commitment to deliver a well-made instrument at an honest price was all the "mission statement" needed.

We first introduced Tofino in January 2010 on the CBC program Dragon's Den, where  Kevin O'Leary chose it over a much more expensive guitar in a blindfold test. Since then, Tofino has become our most requested model.

In 2020 we introduced a special limited edition of Tofino. We call it Tofino X (pronounced "ten").  Without surrendering any of the qualities of the original Tofino, we've added features to set this edition apart - genuine Maple binding on the body, neck and headstock as well as Abalone purfling around the top.

The original Tofino had a back and sides made from Okoume, an African Mahogany. In subsequent production runs, we moved to Indonesian Mahogany, in part out of concern for the unverifiable harvest practices in Central Africa. For 2020, with the advent of FSB certification and monitoring,  we're pleased once again to use African wood - this time Khaya.ivornesis, the premium African Mahogany.

There is no standard electric pickup in this guitar, but the L.R. Baggs Anthem (perhaps the best pickup on the planet) is available as an optional extra. The pickguard is included in the case as a user-installed option. It easily attaches to the top with a self-adhesive backing for those who want a pickguard.

Some of the unique features include:

  • Gold plated 18:1 Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
  • Aged (30 months of air drying) AAA cedar top and AAA Khaya (African Mahogany) B/S
  • Optional L.R. Baggs pickup and preamp
  • A no-additional-cost archtop hardshell case
  • Maple binding
  • Abalone purfling
  • Shallow "V" neck profile

Our artisan-crafted Tofino marries the warm, rich tone of a Western Canadian cedar top with the projection and depth of the African Mahogany back and sides. The Neck is also Mahogany. The fretboard and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The nut and saddle are genuine bone.

A hardshell case is included at no additional cost with every MacKenzie & Marr guitar.

Tofino rivals much more expensive solid-wood acoustic guitars for sound, tonal presence and sheer playability. As with all MacKenzie & Marr Guitars, it carries a limited lifetime warranty against any manufacturing and/or material defects. Play this guitar in the comfort of your own home for a week. If you don't fall in love with it, we'll take it back and issue a full refund, including shipping costs.

My first M&M guitar. The guitar is really beautiful and very well made. No extra glue inside, finish is perfect and the appointments are really classy. In terms of the sound, it is excellent for fingerpicking and easy strumming. If you've not owned a Cedar top guitar, you are in for a treat as long as you know what you're getting. Cedar is wonderful for emanating beautiful tones with just a very soft touch. Combined with the solid mahogany back and sides and you get a guitar that is warm and rich but well balanced - i.e. solid bass but not boomy, great mids and highs. Having said that, the one thing you have to know about Cedar is that it breaks down a bit if you hammer on it - i.e. the sound gets muddy if you strum it really hard. If you are heavy handed or you like to really strum all out, then you would be better off with the Spruce topped dread M&M offers. For me, the size of the guitar combined with the beautiful tones make it perfect for my use. I give it a four instead of 5 for two things - first, there were several left over wood bits inside the guitar which I had to work on getting out and second is the lack of direction for how to connect the battery cable for the pickup. That's not necessarily a limitation of the guitar as much as a suggestion for M&M to include instructions along with the guitar when they ship. Last REALLY positive thing I will say was the set up was fantastic! I requested that they drop the action as much as possible since I mostly fingerpick and light strum without a pick and they really came through on the setup. So easy to play, it is a joy!

My new Tofino X arrived a few days ago, and I am thrilled with it. It sounds good, feels good, and looks good. It is comfortable to play using the finger picking style I favor. I'm very glad to have this instrument.

The Guitar is more than I expected! It looks amazing and sounds great! The case, although it was free, it has a six inch cut on the outside cover, which someone attempted to glue?

I have had this guitar for well over a month now, and it continues to grow on me. It is a beautiful guitar, and the craftsmanship is top notch. It has a very sweet voice, great highs and mids, but a decent bass response as well. I would put it up against a lot of more expensive guitars. I expect many years of playing pleasure with this one. Very glad that I took the leap of faith and purchased one.

Well made, very beautiful instrument. The sound is magnificent! The guitar could easily sell for twice the price. I highly recommend Mackenzie and Marr Guitars Even though the company offers the opportunity to return the guitar, i am definitely keeping mine! Thank you for the privilege of owning a wonderful instrument!

I wrote this review to say how much I like the Tofino. I am a novice guitar player and I have been playing a Taylor Academy for only a year so I cannot give a professional opinion but when I started I choose the Academy for its sound and ease of playing. The Tofino is considerably better in my opinion and the finish and the inlays are just beautiful. I am very pleased.

I'm not a pro and I'm not an accomplished guitarist, but I like to sing and play my guitar and I understand a bit about music and how musicians make it. I've only played "expensive" guitars a couple of times, but I've heard them plenty. The pandemic gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my old seagull s-6. It had warped a bit, the action was high, the tone was dull and the damn thing would not stay in tune, especially in DADGAD. But I persevered, and ordered my Tofino. It was night and day. The tiny neck and low action make it so easy to play. My left thumb has become a Richie Havens weapon. The sound was big and bright and wonderful. Then I changed the strings it came with. Rrringg!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. And I don't need too retune after every song!

I absolutely love my Tofino X! The quality is Top-Self and second to none. The craftsmanship and finish are superb. The action is smooth and the sound is amazing. I love how the aroma of the wood is almost intoxicating as I play, I find it inspiring. The case that comes with it is also of the highest quality. I'm so grateful I came across MacKenzie & Marr guitars, I couldn't be more pleased and happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a high-quality, beautiful-looking, amazing rich-sounding instrument, be sure to check out Mac-Marr guitars before looking anywhere else. Thank you, John and Jonathan, for delivering an outstanding hand-crafted guitar at such an affordable price. A loyal customer for life. Cheers!
