The MacKenzie & Marr Tofino is a solid-wood Cedar top acoustic guitar that harkens back to a time of hand-craftsmanship - before CNC machines took over the production floor, bean counters ruled the office and "branding" replaced pride of artistry - Back to a time when the link between craftsman and musician still existed and back to a time when a simple commitment to deliver a well-made instrument at an honest price was all the "mission statement" needed.

We first introduced Tofino in January 2010 on the CBC program Dragon's Den, where  Kevin O'Leary chose it over a much more expensive guitar in a blindfold test. Since then, Tofino has become our most requested model.

In 2020 we introduced a special limited edition of Tofino. We call it Tofino X (pronounced "ten").  Without surrendering any of the qualities of the original Tofino, we've added features to set this edition apart - genuine Maple binding on the body, neck and headstock as well as Abalone purfling around the top.

The original Tofino had a back and sides made from Okoume, an African Mahogany. In subsequent production runs, we moved to Indonesian Mahogany, in part out of concern for the unverifiable harvest practices in Central Africa. For 2020, with the advent of FSB certification and monitoring,  we're pleased once again to use African wood - this time Khaya.ivornesis, the premium African Mahogany.

There is no standard electric pickup in this guitar, but the L.R. Baggs Anthem (perhaps the best pickup on the planet) is available as an optional extra. The pickguard is included in the case as a user-installed option. It easily attaches to the top with a self-adhesive backing for those who want a pickguard.

Some of the unique features include:

  • Gold plated 18:1 Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
  • Aged (30 months of air drying) AAA cedar top and AAA Khaya (African Mahogany) B/S
  • Optional L.R. Baggs pickup and preamp
  • A no-additional-cost archtop hardshell case
  • Maple binding
  • Abalone purfling
  • Shallow "V" neck profile

Our artisan-crafted Tofino marries the warm, rich tone of a Western Canadian cedar top with the projection and depth of the African Mahogany back and sides. The Neck is also Mahogany. The fretboard and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The nut and saddle are genuine bone.

A hardshell case is included at no additional cost with every MacKenzie & Marr guitar.

Tofino rivals much more expensive solid-wood acoustic guitars for sound, tonal presence and sheer playability. As with all MacKenzie & Marr Guitars, it carries a limited lifetime warranty against any manufacturing and/or material defects. Play this guitar in the comfort of your own home for a week. If you don't fall in love with it, we'll take it back and issue a full refund, including shipping costs.

I'm just a senior who plays at home but wanted to try a higher quality guitar to see if it makes me sound better. After many trips to the big music stores I came back more confused then ever. My brother, who had purchased a Mackenzie Marr 12 string suggested I give them and their 7 day guarantee a try. The price was certainly right, easy to order and shipped to the door. Surprised at the quality of the case, a real bonus, and the guitar looks and sounds beautiful. Yes this guitar makes this old guy sound better.

So far I had purchased two of MacKenzie & Marr guitars for the past 2 years. My first one is an Ian Tyson Inspiration. This one is just as good of a sound as my Martin D-28. My second one is Tofino X which is I just received a few weeks ago. To me the sounds of Tofino is Warm which is perfect for me for playing a lot of strumming and finger picking. In the past I had several guitars in this price range but the Tofino X by far is the best of them all. The craftsmanship of this guitar is amazing. I love all the Abalone purfling, it just makes the guitar so gorgeous. The weight of this guitar is lighter than my other guitar with the same body style, even though a solid woods throughout the guitar. This guitar is almost as light as my Taylor GS Mini Koa. Overall I am very pleased with this Tofino X guitar. In the future I might add my collection of MacKenzie & Marr guitar with the Riverboat Dread Series.

I am absolutely the average MMG buyer being 59 years old with decades of playing acoustic guitar using other brands. I have owned and played dozens of brands including Martin, Larrivee, Gibson, Taylor, Santa Cruz, Garrison, Takamine, Froggy Bottom etc.... So many guitars costing lots more. Over the years, I have actually spent several thousand dollars for a few of these guitars. I no longer own any really expensive guitars since world wide guitar making has improved by leaps and bounds in my opinion. I was not really expecting that much when ordering this Tofino X. I currently have a Martin, Yamaha and Faith guitars that sound great. Imagine my surprise when I unboxed this and realized that it sounds great. This guitar is evenly balanced and perfect intonation and playability up all frets. The playability is hard to describe. It just plays more easily then two of my recent favorites. For a new guitar it also sounds fairly open with great sustain. Very easy action set at a great height for my light flatpicking. The guitar is also very light weight compared to many guitars that I have owned. It fits very comfortably on my lap. The cedar top is also beautiful and does not seem to mellow or muddle the projection as some cedar top do. In fact, it almost sounds like a sitka top even though it is clearly a cedar top when looking at it. After playing several hours over a few days I would recommend this Tofino X to any acoustic guitar player. I would certainly put its sound and playability on level with any of the high end guitars I have owned and my other current favorites. The price point is utterly amazing in terms of this flawless tone and ease of play. Hoping to be a repeat customer if the right model comes out. I am a very happy customer. I am also a bit disappointed by a popular acoustic forum website that degrades these Mackenzie/ Marr guitars. Guitar snobbery is still present and thriving so it seems. Solid value here.

I love my Tofino X. It sounds great. The action is superb. The neck is perfect for my hand. It is beutiful, particularly the maple binding. I also have a Taylor 314- I thought nothing would top it, but the Tofino X does. Not to mention that the Taylor cost almost 3 times as much. The Tofino X is a wonderful, affordable masterpiece of a guitar.

The Tofino X is my third instrument from MacKenzie and Marr, joining six other acoustics, two classical, and eight electrics at my home. The acoustics range from a custom built Hoffman, a Lowden, Gibsons, and others. The Tofino X arrived and I was stunned. It is a work of art. First, the tone woods. The grain on the cedar top looks like it belongs on a $10,000 classical guitar. The Mahogany sides and back are beautiful, subtle in grain and texture, and contribute to the elegance of the look. The neck and fingerboard are perfect. As a player trained in classical guitar technique (though I play many styles and compose for the guitar as a solo instrument), I play all over the fingerboard. Usually, new instrument require me to visit a luthier to set up the action and the neck for my style of playing. Not the Tofino X. Literally, all the way up the neck the intonation, the balance, and the dynamic range were right on point to my top line acoustics including the $9k Lowden. The inlay work: Absolutely beautiful. I am afraid I am going to spend more time staring at the top than playing it. Finally, the sound: I realize the instrument is "green", and few months of playing (and vibrating along with the other instruments as they are played) will only enhance the tone, but, right now? Projection and volume are a match for anything else I have hanging on the wall. This is comparing it to acoustics over 25 years old. In particular, the bass projection is on a par with any jumbo or dreadnaught I have played; a pleasant surprise, as my experience with mahogany instruments is the tone is usually less "deep" than my rosewood instruments. Whether you are chord strummer or a fingerpicker, you will not be disappointed with a Tofino X (if there are any left)!

I received my Tofino X a little over a week ago and like so many other Tofino owners, I was blown away. The construction is flawless, the wood grade exceptional, and the sound superb up and down the neck. I didn’t need another guitar, but the combination of cedar and mahogany intrigued me so I decided to buy ‘just one more’. I took the plunge and am glad I did! This is my third MM guitar having purchased both the Opeongo and the Baby Riverboat previously. These guitars continue to be my go-to guitars in a collection of ten, that includes a high end Taylor and mid-range Martin. My MM guitars measure up in every way to those much more expensive instruments. You can’t go wrong with a MacKenzie and Marr guitar!

A lovely instrument, beautifully crafted and elegant in the hand. Arrived with the action quite low, which I am really enjoying now. Even hitting it hard, there is a cool dynamic, and it’s medium soft voice has a really nice ring. Like others have said, you want to reach for it and play it. It is super approachable new out of the case. I love the neck shape, I love the wood qualities, craftsmanship and this binding; and it has a remarkable resonant sustain in light strings. Not super full like a dreadnaught, but very satisfying. Looking forward to the see how it ages. Superb execution.
